Howdy, Fairview parents and students!

This is Mrs. Shull, or as some of you know me Mrs. S., your friendly, neighborhood art teacher.  This is now my 8th year of teaching art in Jennings at Fairview Elementary, and I love my job!  Teaching art is one of the most enjoyable things in my life.  The opportunity to help kids work with their hands and develop their dexterity and motor skills gives me a lot of satisfaction.  Fairview students will learn about history, geography, languages, math, spelling, different cultures, and reading comprehension in our art classes along with drawing, painting, ceramics, and weaving.  I believe being creative and making art is a crucial part of any child's education.

I graduated from Central Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School as salutatorian and received a scholarship to COE college in Cedar Rapids, IA.  In Iowa I studied ceramics and education to complete my teaching degree for the state of Iowa and Missouri.  I also had the opportunity to go to school in Glasgow, Scotland and complete a program there in Jewelry and Silversmithing.  After graduating college I taught preschool, worked as a pastry chef and prep cook, and was a tutor.  Then I decided to move to Seoul, South Korea to teach English to children and adults.  It was a life changing experience.  I met so many people from so many different countries!  When I returned to the United States I moved to Oakland, CA to become a teacher there.  I worked for the YMCA teaching an international art summer camp and taking care of kids before and after school.  When I returned to St. Louis I worked at an alternative school before coming to Jennings.  All of these experiences have made me a better teacher.

Some interesting facts about me are:

  • One of my hobbies is embroidery, and I make my own handkerchiefs.
  • I love to sing and play guitar
  • I have 2 children: Blue Bear, who is 7, and Sylvia Skye, who is 4.
  • I have been married for 7+ years.
  • I have one older sister and one younger brother.
  • Reading and becoming a librarian is one of my greatest passions. (This must be why many kids call me Mrs. McCaw, our librarian.)
  • My favorite outside activities are biking, hiking, and swimming.
  • In our family, our favorite places to visit are the Zoo, The Science Center, and Forest Park.

I hope you learned some new things about your art teacher, and stop by the art room to see our Art Around The World or visit your child's class anytime.
